It is with great excitement that the Labcorp Company and the Florida Chapter of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) announce year four of the return of the Competitive Labcorp Elite Wheelchair Division of the 2011 Publix Super Markets Gasparilla Distance Classic 15K.

Housing: The beautiful Sheraton Riverwalk will be the wheeler host hotel this year.  It is 400m from the start/finish and will host the Friday night party and Saturday post race awards.

Rate: $149 per night/double room, good till Jan 23rd only

 

*The first 50 elite athletes will be provided a $100 housing stipend in addition to their travel stipends.  Athletes must find their own roommates and make there own reservation.

Wheelchair Division Rules and Protocol

 

Racing Wheelchair Division - Start in front of the start line 5 minutes prior to runners' race.

 

People's Standard Wheelchairs - Start in the appropriate corrals for your projected finish time/pace.

 

Racing Wheelchair Division Rules

  • Racing wheelchairs shall be defined as a customized performance chair. IPC Athletics Rules will be enforced. For additional rules view: www.ipc-athletics.org.

  • Further the race will abide by the rules and policies of the recognized governing bodies of the sports of wheelchair racing, which do not allow the use of mechanical gears found on handbikes. For additional information contact: Wheelchair Sports USA www.wsusa.org and the International Paralympic Committee www.ipc-athletics.org.

Everyday Wheelchair Division Rules

 

  1. Everyday wheelchairs shall be defined as a stock manual wheelchair.
  2. The wheelchair shall have at least four functional wheels.
  3. The overall length of the chair from outside of front casters/wheels to outside of rear wheel shall not exceed 100cm.
  4. The rear wheels shall not exceed 70 cm in diameter. The front caster/wheels shall not exceed 8 inches/ 17.6 cm in diameter.
  5. The rear seat height must be greater than 30 cm (13.6 inches). Persons of small stature may be exempt.
  6. Only one plain round hand rim is allowed for each rear wheel. This rule may be waived for persons requiring a single arm drive chair.
  7. No mechanical gears or levers shall be allowed. The chair must be manually propelled.
  8. All chairs are subject to a rules and safety inspection.
  9. Runners and walkers in all races will have the right of way. Wheelchair racers shall yield to runners or walkers.
  10. It will be the athlete's responsibility to meet the above rules.

 

Handcycles

 

In accordance with national and international wheelchair rules, NO handcycles, handbikes or other mechanically gear driven devices will be permitted in the race.
